What is Sin?

By Carl Holland
Carl's Words of Inspiration

Simply put, sin is anything that is not in line with God’s ways. It is like telling God, “I know better, I’ll do it my way.” It is rebellion against God. Most people seem to just think of sin as outward things we do, like drunkenness, drug addiction, cursing, and sexual promiscuity, just to name a few. Yes, these things are characteristic of a sinful lifestyle, but sin goes much deeper than that, all the way to the depths of the heart.

For out of the heart proceed evil thoughts, murders, adulteries, fornications,
 thefts, false witness, blasphemies. – Matthew 15:19

Sin is reflective of a heart condition. The outward, visible sins are transgressions, or times when we are transgressing, or walking outside of, God’s will for our lives. Before any kind of behavior can exhibit itself outwardly, there must first be a thought process that goes through our mind. When our thoughts and the desires of our heart are not equal with God’s desires for us, it is called our iniquities, or unequalness. This is our “inward” sin, which is reflective of our motives. No matter how well we may hide our intentions from people around us, we can’t hide anything from God.

Some men’s sins are clearly evident, preceding them to judgment,
but those of some men follow later. – 1 Timothy 5:24

You have set our iniquities before You,
Our secret sins in the light of Your countenance. – Psalm 90:8

The Good News is that Jesus died on the cross for you, so that no matter what you’ve done or thought, you can be forgiven and receive His FREE GIFT of eternal life.

But He was wounded for our transgressions,
He was bruised for our iniquities;
The chastisement for our peace was upon Him,
And by His stripes we are healed.
All we like sheep have gone astray;
We have turned, every one, to his own way;
And the LORD has laid on Him the iniquity of us all. – Isaiah 53:5-6

Jesus bled from His wounds on the outside to take the punishment we deserve for our outward sins, or our transgressions. Bruising is an internal bleeding. Jesus bled on the inside to atone for our inner thoughts and motivations, our iniquities. Will you decide to receive the FREE GIFT of eternal life and forgiveness while you still have the chance? We are never guaranteed tomorrow…
